- What is Jiu-Jitsu?
Jiu-Jitsu is Japans oldest martial art; it was developed by
the Samurai as an alternative to fighting with weapons. This meant that if a
Samurai lost his weapon during battle or was in the Imperial court where
weapons were not allowed he still had a way of defending himself. The modern
martial arts of Judo, Karate and Aikido all have their basic origins in
- Why Jiu-Jitsu?
- Unlike most martial arts Jiu-Jitsu is roughly 95% defensive
meaning that the person you are up against attacks first. This means that you
are defending yourself, which by law as long as you use the minimum force
necessary you are allowed to do. Jiu-Jitsu teaches you how to defend yourself
or others against an attacker or attackers using the minimum amount of force to
keep you within the law.
The Milton Keynes club incorporates both modern and
traditional forms of Jiu-Jitsu using blocks, strikes, locks, throws and
strangles making it a very effective form of self defence suitable for both
Male and Female students aged from 7 to 80. Advanced students also get the
chance to learn a variety of weapons systems.
Jiu-Jitsu is a good form of exercise as well as teaching
discipline and self-defence, it teaches students how to gain respect for
themselves as well as how to respect other people. All students especially children
find that they grow in self-confidence as well as improvements in concentration
Jiu-Jitsu has a very large catalogue of techniques which
means that although it does not take long to pick up enough to start defending
yourself and to feel more confident, students find that they are still learning
new things no matter how long they have been training which helps prevent
boredom setting in.
- Club and Instructor Profile
The Milton Keynes club has been established for over 35
years in MK. The club and its instructors have a reputation for setting very
high standards. Although it takes our students longer than students at other
clubs to obtain grades, once they are achieved they know that they can go to
any other club and be as good if not better than students of the same grade.
As a club we are one of the very few that have not gone
commercial, this means that we keep the cost to students as low as possible.
Nobody takes any money from the club; anything left over after paying the bills
goes back into the club and is used towards new equipment.
Milton Keynes Jiu-Jitsu is registered and licenced through Jiu-Jitsu International which is one of the largest Jiu-Jitsu organisations in the world with clubs in over 30 Countries.
Shihan Colin Wood the clubs senior Instructor holds the rank of Black Belt 6th Dan. He joined the club as a beginner in 1982 and trained for 10 years before he received his Black Belt 1st Dan in 1992. In March 2000 when he was a 3rd Dan he became the clubs senior Instructor. In 2008 he was graded to 5th Dan and awarded the title Shihan. In 2016 he received his 6th Dan.
Shihan Wood has trained regularly with and been graded by Soke Richard Morris 10th Dan, head & founder of Jiu-Jitsu International, who is one of the most respected and experienced Jiu-Jitsu Instructors in the World today.

- Private Lessons And Group Courses
- If you would like any private lessons or an instructor to visit you or your group to run a self defence or personal safety awareness course then please contact Renshi W Waughington of Amedeus Self Defence on 07732 166214.
- Junior Club Waiting List
- For safety reasons I am limited to the amount of students that I can have on the mat at any one time.
Due to the popularity of the junior club at the moment I have had to start a waiting list of children waiting for places.
New students are still welcome to come along and watch to see if Jiu-Jitsu is what they are looking for and if so have their names put onto the waiting list or if they contact me with their details I will add their names.
I am sorry that we have had to do this but the safety of the students comes first.
